Alicante

Alicante is located on the southeast coast of Spain on Valencia's Costa Blanca. Once a historic Mediterranean port, it now accommodates cruise ships in place of the commercial ships. Known for its superb white sandy beaches, Alicante enjoys mild winters and dry, sunny summers making it popular with retires and families in all seasons.
Alicante is the second largest city in Valencia and has a major international airport just 11km to the south, making it easy to access from most European cities. Buses and taxis are the best way to reach the city and the main town centre is easy to get around on foot.
Some of the best historic sights in Alicante include the Castle of Santa Barbara which overlooks the city, the impressive Basilica of Santa Maria and the historic defense towers which were built in the 15thcentury to protect the city from the Barbary pirates! The classy promenade along the waterfront used 6.5 million marble stones to build and is lined with shady palm trees making it a delightful place to stroll or people-watch from the cafés and restaurants. The "Barrio" is the centre for nightlife with plenty of lively bars serving cheap drinks.
Those wishing to explore beyond the city will find it an area of natural beauty with mountains, waterfalls and acres of palm and date orchards. There are prehistoric caves nearby and charming villages in the mountains. There are also several parks and gardens to be enjoyed along with fine museums and art galleries.
