Paris

Paris is located in northeast France and is synonymous with romantic breaks, exclusive fashion and grand architecture. This elegant and historic city is the capital of France and sits on the banks of the River Seine. Paris is one of the most densely populated areas in Europe and is home to more than 11 million residents. It welcomes more than 45 million tourists annually to experience its cultural attractions. Over the years Paris has been the home to famous artists, philosophers, writers and even exiled royalty. It is a leading world city in politics, education, fashion, entertainment and the arts.

Paris is very easy to explore on foot from the charming artist's quarter at Montmartre to the busy designer shops along the Champs Elysees. The iconic Eiffel Tower offers great views of the city from the viewing platforms and looks particularly lovely when lit up at night. The city of Paris is known for its fine cultural heritage with many wonderful palaces, plazas, gardens, museums and art galleries. A trip on the Seine in a bateau-mouche is a memorable experience. The Louvre Palace with its world famous collection of artworks including the "Mona Lisa" covers 60,600 square metres and the endless length of this beautiful building is matched only by the lines of visitors queuing to go in. It overlooks the Tuileries and is opposite the Ile de la Cité on which the Notre Dame Cathedral is situated.

Other must-see sights when in Paris include the Arc de Triomphe, the Pompidou Centre, the Musée d'Orsay and the white marble Basilica of the Sacré Coeur. An evening of entertainment can be enjoyed at the operas and shows around the Place de Pigalle. Of course, Paris is known the world over for its French cuisine and it would be almost impossible not to enjoy the meals served at one of the many excellent restaurants in the city, washed down with a bottle of locally produced French wine or champagne. For children, the Paris Zoo and Disneyland Paris may prove an irresistible draw.
