Nice

Nice is a beautiful city on the Mediterranean coast of southern France. It is midway between Cannes and the Italian border on the glamourous French Riviera. The warm sunny summers and mild winters make this coastline very popular with the rich and famous who enjoy shopping in Nice's upmarket boutiques.

Nice has a historic Old Town which draws many international tourists. The surrounding tree-covered hills and the old port add to the charm of this scenic resort. There are still a few locals who make their living as professional fishermen. The pleasant shady squares are lined with beautiful churches, palaces and grand homes while the narrow streets have a good choice of pavement cafés and restaurants serving coffee, glacés and tasty Niçoise cuisine.

The Promenade des Anglais epitomizes the bustling resort of Nice with its joie de vivre. Locals can be seen cycling, biking and roller-blading along the promenade while visitors enjoy the sea views from a hired lounger on the pebbly beach. Old Nice offers some interesting shops lining the narrow streets and the famous flower market makes a colourful sight. Climb the hill (or cheat and take the elevator!) to the ruined Colline du Chateau for great views of the Baie des Anges. Other must-see attractions in Nice include the opulent Russian Cathedral, the Matisse Museum which has a fine display of his colourful artwork, and the Musee Chagall with its fabulous stained glass windows.
