Christmas markets in Europe are a great excuse for a winter break whilst getting some Christmas shopping done in a friendly, stress-free atmosphere. Holiday rentals can be great value in the winter season and offer a chance for a quiet escape and a chance to recharge the batteries before the Christmas rush.

Christmas markets are known by various names in different countries: Marché de Noel in France, Mercatino di Natale in Italy and Christkindlmarket in Germany. Whatever their name, they all offer the same delightful holiday atmosphere, sense of goodwill and Christmas cheer. Generally Christmas Markets are held in the four weeks of advent, leading up to Christmas.

Most Christmas markets in Europe take place in the shadow of the church or cathedral. The small canvas-covered stalls are lit with fairy lights and laden with holly wreaths, hand-made crafts, table decorations and small gifts. The spicy smell of mulled wine lingers in the air from the hot gluhwein stalls. Band music or Christmas carols serenade shoppers as they enjoy a leisurely browse of the stalls.

Christmas Markets in the Netherlands

The Netherlands are very easy to reach by air or ferry and there are a number of established Christmas markets within easy reach of holiday rental apartments. A unique event which solves the problem of inclement weather is the Valkenburg Christmas Market which takes place at the Fluweelengrot or Velvet Caves. Nihmegen, the oldest city in Holland along with Maastricht, Deventer and Dordrecht all have seasonal Christmas markets in the Netherlands to head for.

Christmas Markets in Italy

Although “Mercatino di Natale” is not as widespread in Italy as in other European cities, there are sure to be some events within easy reach of most Italian holiday rentals. Christmas Markets in places such as Piazza Navone in Rome are likely to be memorable, or head for one of the small towns in the Italian Alps around Trentino which all host their own markets.

Italian Christmas markets all have elaborate nativity scenes in the square, adding to the seasonal atmosphere and the emphasis is heavily on Italian food, locally cured meats and cheeses, wines from the area and locally made gift items.

Christmas Markets in Germany

Germany was the birthplace of Christkindlmarkts (Christ Child Markets) and is one of the best countries to head for. Dresden’s first Christmas market was held in 1434 and its 60 stalls now attract up to 2 million visitors a year! The Vienna “December Market” dates back even longer to 1294. If you prefer to stay away from the crowds, most small towns in Germany and Austria have Christmas markets so there are sure to be several within easy reach of your holiday rental in Germany. They often have ice skating rinks nearby which are fun. Keep out the cold with hot gluhwein, Eierpuncsch (like warm egg nog), bratwurst and spicy gingerbread called Lebkuchen.

Christmas Markets in France

France is a great destination for a Christmas shopping weekend break. As well as visiting one of the many Christmas markets, you can stock up with cheap alcohol to make Christmas go with a bang. Those taking the Eurostar will find Christmas markets in both Paris and Lille. Strasbourg has a charming Christmas Market in the cathedral square which captures the fantastic atmosphere of the season perfectly. It is also a great place to pick up preserved fruits, cheeses and fresh mistletoe which will keep for weeks in a cool place.

Wherever you find yourself in the weeks leading up to Christmas, check local information of your nearest Christmas Market and take a trip. It will make a wonderful start to the Christmas season and is a great way to tackle that Christmas shopping list.
