Phuket

The tropical destination of Phuket is Thailand's largest island. It is located off the west coast in the Andaman Sea and is connected by a bridge to the mainland. In the 17th century it was a coveted island on the main trade route between India and China with rich tin and rubber reserves making it valuable to the Dutch, English and French. It is now sought-after as one of the world's top five retirement destinations with a low cost of living, beautiful beaches and a pleasant lifestyle. The tropical monsoon climate gives a steady 31-33C (88-92F) all year round, but from May to October there can be heavy showers in the wet season.
The main international airport is on the north side of the island and has frequent flights to Bangkok. Phuket is just 48km long and 21km at its widest point so it is easy to get around. Exploring the island's beaches and sights can be done using the colourful songthaew buses, taxis, mopeds or three-wheeler tuk-tuks. The long-tail boats offer boat trips and are a great way to explore other beaches.
The interior of the island is densely covered with rainforest, rubber and palm oil plantations. Along the west coast are many gorgeous sandy beaches with warm clear waters which make snorkeling and scuba diving a pleasure, although rip tides are a danger on some beaches. Deep sea fishing charters and sea canoeing trips can also be enjoyed.
Phuket's main attractions are Patong Beach, the scenic viewpoint across to Ko Pu Island, the temple of Wat Chalong and the Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Park. More modern attractions include the Phuket Aquarium with its underwater tunnel, the Butterfly Garden and Zoo. The island also has some beautiful waterfalls and ornate shrines with golden buddhas.
Phuket has many restaurants and bars which offer very reasonably priced food and drink. The Thai cuisine is popular world-wide and the fresh seafood is particularly delicious.
