Arezzo

Arezzo is a charming city and commune in Central Italy, in the popular region of Tuscany. Arezzo is 80km (50 miles) southeast of Florence and has a population of just under 100,000 people. The city is on a steep hillside overlooking the Valley of the River Arno. It was one of the most important cities in Etruscan times. It was later conquered by the Romans and became a military station. The Roman city was eventually demolished leaving only the amphitheatre, which can still be seen.
The notable attractions in Arezzo include the 13thcentury Gothic Cathedral, the Town Hall and the Medici Fortress. The town has retained its medieval appearance complete with its defensive walls and gates. The Piazza Grande is the most noteworthy medieval square in Arezzo, behind the 13thcentury apse of the Santa Maria della Pieve which has a square bell tower.
Around the main square are the 14thcentury Palace of the Lay Fraternity and the 13thcentury Episcopal Palace with its fabulous frescoes, Arezzo’s most famous attraction. In front of the palazzo is the monument of the Grand Duke Ferdinando I de’Medici.
Beyond the city, a drive through the picturesque Arno Valley is a must, especially when the autumn colour of the trees is at its best.
Arezzo has a unique place in world history. It was the home of botanist, Andrea Cesalpino and Guido of Arezzo who developed the musical scale for writing music. Other famous painters and sculptors, scholar Petrarch and many others have left their indelible mark on this remarkable city.
Dining out on local cuisine in Arezzo is a real pleasure. It is famous for its “acquacotta” with fried onions, tomatoes, eggs and cheese all “cooked in water”. Stuffed pheasant and sautéed chicken giblets are two other tasty specialties.
