Stalos is a beautiful beach resort and town about 7km west of Chania in northwest Crete. The island enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and mild sunny winters with showers. The lower town of Kato Stalos borders the extensive sandy beach and Blue Flag waters of the Sea of Crete. It has small local shops and several waterfront tavernas for dining alfresco. Closer to the sand, thatched beach bars do a good trade in cool drinks and snacks.
Pano (Upper) Stalos sits 150m above, slightly aloof and enjoying beautiful sea views. It has a slower pace of life than the beachfront and is surrounded by a patchwork of olive groves and vineyards. This is the older part of the town and has some excellent local shops, a local bakery, restaurants and some nightlife.
Stalos town looks across to the uninhabited island of Agii Theodori which stands just offshore like a giant sea monster. The cave at one end gives the appearance of a wide mouth! Visitors taking a boat trip to the island will find the remains of two fortresses built by the Venetians, and plenty of wildlife.
Trips out around Stalos may include a visit to the town of Falassarna, about 45 minutes’ drive away, or a drive through the mountains to Elafonisi. The charming town of Chania is easy to reach by local bus.
