Kerames

Hanging precariously above the blue waters of the Libyan Sea is the pretty white village of Kerames on the south coast of Crete. Equidistant from both Heraklion and Chania airports, it is easy to reach for those looking for a relaxing sunshine vacation away from the ratrace. Karames is in a more secluded area of Crete, away from the crowds and frenetic nightlife that typify some more lively resorts.
Almost untouched by tourism, Kerames has retained its local shops and authentic way of life. Unspoilt beaches and hidden coves offer visitors the chance to sunbathe and swim with a beach almost entirely to themselves. Walkers can stroll along the water’s edge and enjoy the fresh sea air on a 2km walk east to the tavernas at Ligres. The area is rich in wildlife, flora and fauna. Look for rare wild orchids or watch eagles soaring overhead.
To the west of Kerames is the Swallows Canyon Beach which is backed by a natural lagoon. The impressive Moni Preveli Monastery sits alone on the nearby hilltop. Climb the steps from Preveli Beach and enjoy the stunning sea views from the top.
A car is necessary for enjoying holiday rentals in Kerames. The historic town of Rethymno is an hour’s drive away with its Venetian fortress, museums and market. Closer to home is the town of Spili, known for its natural springs and authentic tavernas. It is the nearest town for supermarkets and services. Other memorable attractions nearby are the old fishing port of Agia Galini and the impressive Agios Antonios Gorge.
